How neurotoxins actually work

All three products are forms of botulinum toxin type A. Injected in small, measured amounts, they block the nerve signal that tells a muscle to contract. The muscle stays relaxed, the skin over it stops creasing, and the line softens. They work on lines caused by movement. A line that is visible when your face is completely still is a change in the skin itself, and that responds to microneedling or RF skin resurfacing instead. Most people who want both end up combining them.

Botox, Dysport or Xeomin

The three are not interchangeable and they are not measured on the same scale, so a unit of one is not a unit of another. Dysport tends to spread a little more from the injection point, which some injectors prefer for broader areas like the forehead. Xeomin is formulated without the accessory proteins the other two carry. Botox is the most widely known and the most studied. Which one you get depends on the area being treated, how your muscles behave, and what you have responded to before, and your injector will talk that through with you rather than defaulting to one product.

Areas we treat

Forehead lines, the frown lines between the eyebrows, and crow's feet at the outer corners of the eyes are the three areas most people come in for. Neurotoxins are also used to soften a gummy smile, relax the chin, slim a heavy jaw muscle, and lift the outer brow slightly. Not every area suits every face, and part of a consultation is telling you when an area is better left alone.

What to expect

Your injector marks the treatment points while you make the expressions that create the lines, so placement matches how your face actually moves. The injections themselves use a very fine needle and take a few minutes. Most people describe a quick pinch. There is no downtime, and you can go back to work or to your next appointment. Movement starts to soften within a few days and settles over roughly two weeks. Results last several months and then fade gradually, which is when most people schedule again.

Aftercare

  • Stay upright for four hours and skip lying face down.
  • No workouts, saunas or hot yoga for 24 hours.
  • Do not rub or massage the treated areas.
  • Bruising is possible at any injection site and usually settles within a few days.
  • Book your follow-up at two weeks if you want the result assessed.

How long does Botox last?

Most people see their result hold for three to four months before movement gradually returns. How long it lasts varies with the area treated, how strong the muscle is, and your own metabolism. Your injector can tell you what to expect for your treatment areas at consultation.

Will I look frozen?

Not if the dosing suits your face. The goal is to soften the lines while leaving you able to express yourself. If a natural result matters to you, say so at consultation. It changes how much product is used and where.

Does it hurt?

The needle is very fine and most people describe it as a brief pinch. The whole set of injections takes a few minutes. Topical numbing is available if you would rather have it.

How soon can I go back to work?

Straight away. There is no downtime. You may have small raised bumps at the injection sites that settle within about 20 minutes, and occasional bruising that makeup covers.

Is it safe?

Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are FDA-approved for cosmetic use in specific facial areas. Safety depends heavily on who is injecting and on an honest medical history, which is why treatment here is performed or supervised by our medical director and why we ask about your health and medications every visit.

Can I combine it with filler?
