Microneedling creates thousands of controlled micro-injuries in the skin, and the collagen your body lays down healing them is what smooths scarring, texture and fine lines. We perform it at our Boca Raton med spa as a series, under the supervision of our medical director. Each session takes about an hour with numbing. This is not a treatment that works by putting something into the skin. A fine needle cartridge makes controlled punctures at a set depth, and your skin responds the way it responds to any wound: by producing collagen and elastin. That new tissue is what fills a depressed scar and softens a line. It also explains why results build over months rather than appearing after the appointment, and why a series does far more than a single session.
It is one of the better tools for depressed acne scarring, enlarged-looking pores, rough texture and early fine lines. It does less for raised scarring, for deep static folds that are really volume loss, and for active acne, where needling across inflamed skin can spread bacteria. If volume is the actual issue, dermal filler is the right answer. If the issue is pigment, IPL may serve you better. Part of a consultation is sorting out which of those you have.
Needle depth is adjusted across the face because the skin is not the same thickness everywhere. Thin skin around the eyes is treated far more shallowly than a scarred cheek. This is one of the clearest reasons at-home rollers are not equivalent: they are one fixed length, they are difficult to keep sterile, and they cannot be adjusted for the area.

Treated skin is temporarily more sensitive to UV, and in South Florida that means daily sunscreen without a seasonal break. Come to your appointment without a fresh tan or sunburn, because treating recently sun-exposed skin raises the risk of pigment changes. If you have a beach trip or a golf weekend planned, book around it rather than through it.

Numbing cream sits for about 20 to 30 minutes. The pass itself takes 15 to 30 minutes and feels like a vibrating sandpaper sensation, stronger over bone. Afterward the skin is red and warm, similar to a moderate sunburn, and that is the normal response. Most of the redness settles within 24 to 48 hours. Skin may feel tight and flake lightly over the following days. Results build over the weeks after each session and compound across the series.
It is a series treatment, and the number depends on what you are treating. Scarring generally takes more sessions than texture or early fine lines. Your provider will plan the series at consultation rather than quoting a standard figure.
Numbing cream is applied for 20 to 30 minutes first, and most people find it very manageable after that. It feels stronger over bony areas like the forehead and jaw.
Most people are noticeably red for 24 hours and close to normal by 48. Some light flaking can follow. It is best not to book this the day before an event.
They are not the same treatment. A professional device lets the depth be adjusted for each area of the face, is sterile, and is used by someone who can see what your skin is doing. Fixed-length home rollers cannot do any of that.
Not over active, inflamed breakouts. Needling across them can spread bacteria and worsen things. Getting the acne settled first is part of the plan, and then microneedling is a strong option for the scarring left behind.
