Spider veins are the small red, blue and purple vessels visible just under the skin, most often on the legs and face. We assess them at our Boca Raton med spa before treating, because visible leg veins are sometimes a surface sign of an underlying circulation problem that has to be addressed first. Cosmetic or medical

This is the question the assessment answers, and it is why we do not treat leg veins on request without one. Many spider veins are purely cosmetic. Some are the visible edge of venous insufficiency, where the valves in the deeper veins are not working properly. Treating the surface vessels while the underlying problem continues means they come back, and the underlying problem goes on unaddressed. Symptoms worth mentioning include aching or heaviness in the legs at the end of the day, swelling around the ankles, and cramping at night.

Facial vessels are a different situation

The small broken vessels around the nose and cheeks are usually a sun damage and skin sensitivity issue rather than a circulation one, and background facial redness often responds well to IPL. If your redness flushes easily, worsens with heat, alcohol or spice, and sits mostly across the central face, mention that at consultation, because rosacea is managed rather than simply treated.

What suits you is decided at consultation, from your skin and your history. Consultations are complimentary.

New veins can still appear

Treating a vessel deals with that vessel. It does not change the genetics, hormonal influences, pregnancies or hours on your feet that produced it. Most people need occasional maintenance, and knowing that in advance is better than being surprised by it a year later.

What to expect

The consultation covers how long the veins have been there, whether they have changed, any leg symptoms, your family history, pregnancies, and how much of your day is spent standing. The area is examined directly. If the assessment points to an underlying venous problem, you will be referred for that to be evaluated before any cosmetic treatment. If the veins are cosmetic, your provider explains the appropriate approach, how many sessions are likely, and what recovery looks like.

Aftercare

  • Wear compression exactly as instructed if it is prescribed.
  • Walk regularly; avoid long periods of sitting or standing still.
  • Expect treated veins to darken or bruise before clearing.
  • Sun protection on treated areas, particularly on the face.
  • Report increasing pain, swelling or warmth in a leg immediately.

Why do I need an assessment before spider vein treatment?

Because visible leg veins are sometimes the surface sign of an underlying circulation problem. Treating the surface while that continues means the veins return and the real issue stays unaddressed.

What symptoms suggest something more than cosmetic?

Aching or heaviness in the legs at the end of the day, swelling around the ankles, and night cramps are worth mentioning. So is a family history of venous problems.

Will the veins come back?

Treated vessels do not return, but new ones can appear, because treatment does not change the genetics, hormones or hours on your feet behind them. Occasional maintenance is normal.
